I started my journey into film through photography at art school, starting with my Dad’s old 35mm Canon then selling that to buy a digital 450D, Dad wasn’t too happy about me flogging his camera and now I kind of wish I hadn’t but if I didn’t maybe I wouldn’t be doing what I am now. The 450D was eventually replaced with a 7D which could do something the 450D couldn’t, it could shoot video! As I started to shoot more and more video I wanted to explore beyond what the standard kit lenses that came with my camera could give me.
With the advent of digital second hand shops and landfills were full of old analogue cameras that I could pick up for mere dollars, I was a student at the time and didn’t have the cash to spend on fancy new lenses, but I could afford buy as many of these old beauties as I wanted! The first time I adapted an old Mamiya lens to my digital camera was by hacking the centre out of a canon body cap and using hot melt glue to secure the lens into the middle, it worked like charm!
The days of cheap analogue cameras awe well and truly behind us now, a resurgence in the popularity of analogue photography has seen the prices of everything associated with it shoot back up, but I still love them and have managed to acquire a pretty good collection of about 15 - 20 different analogue cameras that I normally use for personal photography.
My only real regret is that I didn’t buy more before they got so expensive!
