Chasing the Southern Lights

The recent high solar activity has reminded me of the first article I ever had published, way back in 2013 while I was studying biology and journalism at the University of Tasmania, I wrote this piece for an assignment and it subsequently got run on the Australian Geographic website, becoming one of their most viewed stories of the year.

In 2013 we didn’t have any aurora’s quite as spectacular as the the huge one we had on the 11th of May this year, and even if we did smart phone cameras hadn’t developed to the point of being able to do it any justice, neither was social media as ubiquitous in our lives as it is now but revisiting the story was a nice way to remember how far I’ve come as a storyteller and also reflect on how much technology has changed in the last ten years!

I also went on to work with Jonathan Esling and Ian Stewart several more times filming glow worms, bioluminescent fungi and bioluminescent phytoplankton for various productions.
